Microspots Discussed as Possible Rural Internet Solution

As beautiful as our area is for everyday living, some people complain about the limitations when it comes to reliable internet. The hills and hollows make it difficult for signals to travel, and services like DSL have yet to make it out our way.

A new plan to install “microspots” in Culpeper, Orange and Madison counties  has earned Virginia Broadband a grant from Microsoft. Microspots are a series of utility poles that relay wireless internet service into isolated areas.

According to the Star Exponent:

The company currently uses about 30 of these mini-towers; the grant will allow the installation of nine more at a cost of about $10,000 each, according to Robert Sullivan, VABB’s CEO/president and an original founder of the company. Most of VABB’s Microspots are in the Northern Neck; however, Culpeper County currently has two.

Fauquier County to Spend Big on Broadband

screen-shot-2016-12-08-at-5-20-46-pmOur area is blessed with natural beauty and a neighborly countryside manner, but soon we’ll also be able to offer faster, more reliable internet.

Fauquier’s board of supervisors could commit $20 million in next five years to expand broadband internet service to rural areas of the county.

“I’ve had discussions with the other supervisors” about using taxpayer money to fund broadband, said Supervisor Rick Gerhardt (Cedar Run District), chairman of the county’s broadband advisory committee. “It’s a priority for the county.”

Mr. Gerhardt called those discussions “extremely positive . . . . Unless something crazy happens, I don’t see a problem.”

Schools, Kids Becoming More of a Factor In Real Estate

aboutiPhoneAppA new poll of millennial parents (aged 18 to 34) reveals that the well-being of their children is playing a much greater role in real estate decisions.

According to a Coldwell Banker Real Estate survey of 2,800 parents spanning three generations, sixty-seven percent of young parents said their child’s immediate emotional well-being was a more important factor than other things like career when considering a move. Compare that with 64 percent of Generation X parents (aged 35 to 49) and 54 percent of boomer parents (aged 50 to 69) who said their kids took precedence.

And a recent study by Redfin suggests homebuyers are often willing to pay steep price premiums for homes served by top-ranked schools.

It really pays to know everything about your real estate market, whether you’re looking at Virginia real estate or anywhere else. Most real estate clients with young children expect their Realtors to know a thing or two about local schools, their ratings and districts. Because these districts change often, it can be difficult to speak with absolute authority on local schools. Luckily there’s a free mobile iPhone/iPad/iTouch app makes it possible for prospects to research this information on their own.

The GreatSchools app allows you to locate and map nearby elementary, middle, and high schools or search listings across the U.S. You can also view detailed ratings, reviews, and test scores.

Need a Little Motivation?

napoleonThis is not necessarily real estate oriented, but if you’re feeling a little slow or weary this week and need some inspiration, here are seven quotes on leadership. Believe it or not, Napoleon has a great one:

“A leader is a dealer in hope.” –Napoleon Bonaparte

and then there’s:

“I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure, which is: Try to please everybody.” —Herbert Swope

I hope some of these help you to success.
